North Korea and US Remain in Contact after Hanoi Summit

Reports indicate that North Korea and the US are still in contact even after negotiations broke down during their Hanoi summit. The schedule of future negotiations – including a potential visit to North Korea by US State Department Special Representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun – doesn’t seem to have been nailed down yet.

 

Pompeo says He wants to Send Negotiation Team to Pyongyang in Few Weeks

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he hopes to send a team of negotiators to Pyongyang within a few weeks. The US has expressed its commitment to continuing dialogue even after its second summit with North Korea – held in Hanoi, Vietnam, on Feb. 28 – ended without an agreement.

US, South Korea Cancel Major War Games ‘To Support Diplomatic Efforts’

The US and South Korea have canceled major war games that have long been a source of tensions on the Korean Peninsula in order to “support diplomatic efforts” with North Korea. News of the cancellation comes after the second summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended without an agreement, though the two sides did pledge to continue to work towards denuclearization and a peace settlement.

 

Korea and US to Reduce Another Joint Exercise in Summer

Following the news that South Korea and the US will be halting their joint Key Resolve and Foal Eagle exercises that they’ve held every March, reports surfaced on Mar. 6 that the two countries will also be ending their Ulchi-Freedom Guardian joint exercise, which was scheduled for August, and replacing it with exercises under different names.

Moon Makes North Korea-US Dialogue a Top Policy Priority

On Mar. 4, South Korean President Moon Jae-in made preventing North Korea-US dialogue from being derailed a top policy priority. This shift in priority appears to have been motivated by concerns that North Korea and the US’ failure to reach an agreement in their recent summit could cause the situation to spiral out of control. In particular, Moon strongly argued that the South Korean government must ensure it doesn’t miss the “golden time” for tackling the crisis in North Korea-US dialogue with his remark that “it only takes a moment for things to fall apart.”

 

Another ‘Comfort Woman’ Survivor Passes Away without Apology from Japanese Government

The tragic life of Gwak Ye-nam, a survivor of sexual slavery as a “comfort woman” for the Japanese military, has now come to an end. She was 94.
